Anxiety of Influence

Dr. Wright's Wright Therapy® includes many nuggets of wisdom already known by a good many writers: read the types of books you want to write. Unfortunately, this can lead to a paralyzing condition known as anxiety of influence.

"Reading other writers, writers that are so good they blow your mind, can be very daunting," says Dr. Wright. Anxiety of influence can result when a writer working on a project picks up a book and is so taken with its prose, its style, its voice, that he temporarily loses his own voice and style in an unconscious attempt to mimic the writer he's reading.

Dr. Wright's techniques for dealing with A of I are both compassionate and pragmatic; toss in a little tough love, and Dr. Wright gives the affected writer a chance to step out of his envy, jealousy, and self-doubt and move into a place of confidence and optimism again.

"I've met Philip Roth, and you, sir, are no Philip Roth." –Dr. Julian Wright
